Completed Projects
Shengcun

Prior to the Incorporation of the YAF, the principle parties of the YAF began a school in Shengcun. This was our first building project that replaced a two classroom school for grades one and two. The old school was made of adobe and contained rough benches for the students and a single blackboard. It was very dark and the ceiling area was rented for storage of cattle fodder.
The village is located down a steep grade form the mountain road passing nearby. The new school is located near the road. It consists of two classrooms, two dormitories for the teachers, kitchen, privy, playground, cistern, electric supply, enclosing wall and gate. It is a very modern rural Chinese school.
The new school has 8 classrooms, dormitory for the students, 16 apartments for the teachers, large kitchen, clinic used by the school and the local village, privy (the first in the village), playground, electric supply for the school, clean water supply for the school and village (previously all water came from a local river with several villages located upstream), drainage ditches, 2000 square meters of land to grow vegetables for the school food program, office for the protection of the environment and enclosing wall to keep out local farm animals. We would still like to add another privy as the first one is too small for the number of students and a shower area for the students and village. All bathing and washing must now be done in the river.
Lula is a very remote village, located 4 kilometers from the Myanmar border. It is very difficult to attract quality teachers to this area. We hope that the new school will entice better quality teachers to Lula. Teaching in Lula is a very difficult job. There are 13 minorities in Lula itself and more in the surrounding areas. They each have their own culture and language.

Lulacun

The Lula school is a much larger project begun by the YAF with assistance from Project Hope in 2002. The YAF and Project Hope with help from the Jinghong Communist Party convinced the local government of the merits of the school and made this project possible.
The old school in Lula was a bamboo hut containing rough wooden benches for the students and a single blackboard. Water would stream through the mud floor of the school when it rained.

Teaching is conducted in Mandarin as this is the major language of China. The children must learn Mandarin to improve their opportunities. Mandarin is the language for education but conversations between students and teachers usually take place in their local languages.
In the 2005 academic year we expect 300 students to attend Lula school. They will come from Lula and many nearby local villages. The students will stay at the Lula school during the week and return home on weekends and holidays. Food for the students is also supplied. All the students served by this school are ethnic minorities. This school is also a major focal point of the YAF scholarship program allowing student scholars to attend grades 7-9.

Due to the limited funds of the YAF, the serious poverty of the Lula area and the remote location the school, the school building project has taken 3 years to complete. The YAF has donated $86,000.00US and the local government has contributed $37,000.00US EST. The school project has been a source of pride for the village and the government. Road construction in the area has made it possible to get to Lula by vehicle.
The school has provided a place for all the villages nearby to gather discuss problems and have celebrations. The warm heartfelt feelings of the local people and communities are clearly demonstrated. These are projects that would have taken several generations to complete without outside help.
It is the hope of the YAF that this school will help to provide more opportunities and choices for the young people of the Lula area. Instead of early marriage, moving unprepared into the large cities or engaging in unhealthy behavior, we hope to introduce new opportunities for life choices. It is the hope of every parent to provide a better life for their children. We hope that through education, the efforts of YAF and the local governments can make the parent¨s hope a reality.
